Statement of Originality

I, Sarah "Camren" Reedy, assure my audience that I have done everything in my power to make original work and to in no way, shape, or form plagiarize any of the content here. Nexus Solutions

Technical writers often create documents critical to the life and wellbeing of a company. Marketing materials, service manuals, compliance and quality documents, etc. It is understandable for prospective employers to want to see proof of ability before hiring an employee. Portfolios are common and expected. However, NDA’s pose an issue. How does one demonstrate their abilities while also respecting a legal agreement to not distribute proprietary information?I’ve approached this by creating Nexus Solutions. Nexus Solutions is a made-up company and does not exist. I've created documents that demonstrate my knowledge and skills without revealing proprietary information. Nexus Solutions is a manufacturing company that's pivoting into technology and the future.

Nexus Solutions Branding Guidelines

Nexus Solutions, the company I made-up, is a manufacturing company in the midst of pivoting from heavy machinery to technology. Manufacturers tend to prefer simple, clean fonts like Arial. To set them apart, Lato was used. Its sans serif nature combined with plenty of weights lends itself to being used for headings, subheadings, and body text. To indicate the company's desire to pivot, blue was used.I designed the logo by considering what shapes in manufacturing and STEM. In this instance, I was inspired by the similar shapes of cogs and aromatic chemicals.

Broken Blade Safety

Safety is everyone's responsibility. Educating staff how to handle common safety issues can reduce injuries and downtime.

Laser Setup

Sometimes a process is too in-depth for just a work instruction. An SOP is a good way to give employees and overview.

Replacing Permeability Media

Great products require a great quality assurance lab. Maintaining equipment ensures quality products and prevents the replacement of costly equipment.

Load Process Conditions

I would be remiss if I didn't include a WI or SOP involving process conditions, one of the most common documents in manufacturing. Instructing employees how to input process conditions is a must.

Sealify Release Notes

This example was inspired by several instances of companies seeking to update legacy systems. These updates often happen in-house but still require release notes.

Challenges

Challenge 1
Client requested a process on an industrial machine be developed into instructions for employees. However, the process didn’t happen at a consistent day or time. I checked the anticipated schedule to predict the next time the process would occur and consulted with employees. I asked permission to be on-site during off hours and was able to capture the process without significantly increasing downtime.
Challenge 2
Client requested a simplified manual for an industrial machine’s controls so new employees could become familiar with operations. Engineers couldn’t agree how to display the information. I mocked up four display layouts based on their discussions. In the next meeting, engineers quickly agreed on a display layout.
Challenge 3
Client requested a signoff sheet be created under a tight deadline. The client had suffered a major loss in profits due to employees not understanding nor filling out a signoff sheet. I created a project timeline and planned review sessions in advance. I updated the signoff sheet to layman's terms, checking in with both engineers and employees to confirm clarity. I developed in-depth instructions, which were immediately implemented in training. The project was completed on time and to the level the client desired.

Two Bugs in a Spacesuit

A customer requested a logo design. The customer requested that their insect avatars be featured in the logo. After several thumbnails, a concept was decided. The customer asked for a specific style of art, and two final drafts were produced. You can view the final selection at: Two Bugs in a Spacesuit
